Apple-Eater

Nate and I had a very memorable moment at the grocery store yesterday! Kenna has been eating apples for awhile now, all cut up of course, and seems to really love them. Well yesterday, while in the produce section, she was asking to hold an apple while I was bagging some on my own, so I gave her one and we kept shopping. A moment later I looked down at the cart to find her chomping away at her apple! It was the cutest and most hysterical thing we've seen in awhile...just this little tiny girl eating a whole apple! Sure it wasn't washed or anything, but she LOVED it, stayed busy (took her almost 2 hours to eat the dang thing!) and she thought she was such a big girl! Truly a moment to remember :)

Little Monkey!

My friend Katy was in town over the weekend and we were lucky enough to be able to see her before she left! We headed to lunch at Bubba Gump's at the MOA and then walked around for a bit to catch up. Katy was our very first visitor at the hospital when Kenna was born and this was the first time she saw her since then :) She's changed just a bit she said! HA! She was sweet and also brough Kenna a little Christmas gift and it's the most adorable little monkey hat ever! Thank you Aunt Katy - we miss you and hope to see you again soon!

First Official Snow!

We had our first official snow over the weekend and it was COLD!!!! Brrrrr! We got Kenna all suited up the morning after to see how she liked it.

At first she was a little hesitant and just sat there trying to figure it all out...

But then when she realized she could walk and play, she was all over the place! It was so fun to see her all bundled up and having fun! Happy Winter!

Mackenna's Tummy Troubles

So what a rough several of months we've had at the Schlieman household with Mackenna's little tummy...from the time she turned 1 and we switched her to whole milk and new solid foods time and time again, we are having some issues in the #2 department. She has gotten extremely backed up over the months and it has caused a lot of discomfort for her. Initially our pediatrician had us take her off whole milk and put her on soy. The soy seemed to help, BUT it didn't take care of the issue completely. We witness Kenna in a full plank position straining, crying, turning bright red, etc etc etc. It's heart breaking as a parent to watch. Her appetite has been hit or miss, she's more tired some days than others, she has the beginning of an ethiopian tummy from the distended intestine and she's just been off. We wanted to believe it was just a milk thing, but I kept bringing it up to the doctor and they just kept saying it was 'normal' for kids to experience constipation and that we'd get through it and by age 2, she'd be like a new child.

Well last week, she had to go in to get her ears checked out again and I just had that mother's instinct I guess you can call it, that something is really going on with her little system and I asked again that they DO SOMETHING to figure this out and that I felt it wasn't 'normal' for her to be acting like this and to continue to have these episodes. Thankfully the doc we saw called for a tummy X-Ray and it showed exactly what we thought - an extreme back up in her colon and large intestine. She said that because it was pretty extreme that we should head to MN Gastroenterolgy to see a specialist. At this point, we were just grateful we were starting to get somewhere.

So yesterday, we headed to St. Paul to see Dr. Aurora and hopefully get some answers. It was amazing at the amount of "AH HA" moments we had listening to him. All her syptoms seemed to make more sense when he explained what was going on inside her. The outcome of our visit with Dr. Aurora is that Mackenna needs to have a surgical procedure called a Gastrografin Enema at Children's in Minneapolis. See this link below if you want more information, however, the article seems to focus on older kids and what goes on, so we're still kinda confused how this will all work with a 17 month old:

http://www.childrensmn.org/Manuals/PFS/TestProc/118816.pdf

Basically, it's a 30-60 minute procedure to get our little punkin cleaned out and on the right track to having BM's on her own with no pain, no fear and ease. We know she won't be put under for the procedure, but we aren't too sure how it will work. Considering she's an ancy little girl and has to lay there for a big amount of time, we're thinking she'll have a sedative of some sort, but again, we're not 100% sure. We go next Wednesday at 9:15 with the actual procedure beginning at 9:30am. Once it's over, we'll continue to give her Miralax once a day for a couple weeks to get her mental state back on track to let her learn that she can do it and there is no pain. After a couple weeks of that, we should be free and clear to take her off of everything and be good to go! HERE'S HOPING it all works!

We're glad that we were finally heard and that my instinct was correct - it's amazing how you have to push doctors sometimes to go above and beyond, but moving past that, we're just happy to be on track to have our little girl back to herself again!

Mackenna's Halloween 2011

Halloween was so much fun this year! Mackenna had a BIG day! First it was a Halloween Party at daycare with lots of fun games and songs and even lunch shaped like spiders :)We didn't send her in her Minnie costume, but she of course had a special outfit!

Nate and I had the day off, so after our 'Date Day' we got her picked up and headed to Grandpa Mack's office to do a little trick-or-treating and start the night out! It was a riot to watch her - she figured out very quickly that if she went to each office, she would get candy and if she didn't, she would say "Bye!" in her sweet little voice and move on to the next!

Then it was off to Grammie and Grampie Harrison's house! When we got there, Kenna had a treat bag with lots of goodies for her! An adorable little outfit from grammie's favorite place Gymboree, some animal crackers and a few other little things. Great Grandma had even left some goodies for her as well!

Before we headed out, we took our traditional Halloween pic on the front step and Mackenna checked out the new friend grammie had out for display as well :)

Then it was time to do some actual first time trick-or-treating over at the Havron's house! We were able to go to about 5 or 6 houses and she seemed to have a good time. Hesitant at a few houses, but then after watching her cousins, she seemed to get a bit more confidence!

We had such a fun, eventful day! We were all exhausted by the time we got home, but it was full of many memories and fun "firsts" for all of us!

Meet and Greet with Minnie!

A couple weekends ago, I got a wonderful text from Pati letting me know that Mackenna's favorite character Minnie Mouse was at the Mall of America for the grand re-opening of the Disney Store and she was taking pictures with all the kids! Nate was at baseball that day, so Kenna and I got her Minnie dress on and rushed to meet her! I think I was a bit more excited as clearly she had no idea what was going on...

She was such a good girl waiting in line and was so in awe of everything around her.

When it was our turn, she went right up to Minnie, holding her stuffed Minnie, with a big smile on her face!

When it was time to actually take a picture with Minnie then she became a bit more hesitant with what was going on, but she seemed to really LOVE everything about her visit and I was such a happy mommy watching it all take place! Truly PRICELESS! Thank you Pati!

And we're back!

Man, I sure have been bad lately with keeping this blog updated!!! Life has been so busy with this little toddler running around and changing before our eyes! But no more excuses, here are some fun pics and updates over the last several weeks!

Kenna's been brushing her teeth lots lately and she even likes to get up on the stool from time to time with Daddy to be just like him :)

She has also become super independent and has to feed herself and do anything she possibly can by herself! She just figured out how straws work too and although we've had a few messes because of it, it sure is cute to see her be such a big girl!

One of the cuter moments she's had lately is when she found one of my poms from my MVC days and fell in love with it! She has it in the car each morning on the way to Pati's and just loves to hold and shake it!

Mackenna has always been a joy, but lately she has just been SO MUCH FUN! She's talking SO much and has added quite a bit to her vocabulary these days since the last update, including, but not limited to:

"Here you go!"
"Baby"

She also has a favorite song - Foster the People's,'Pumped Up Kicks'! She gets really excited and does some pretty funny dance moves (picture a mini sumo wrestler!) it's so great to watch!

We can't believe she's almost 18 months (17 months tomorrow) - time is going by way too fast so we're just trying to soak it all up while we can and can't wait for the holidays and all the new traditions to start with our family!
